Reading for Pleasure
When children and young people enjoy reading, they read more often, helping to build vital reading skills and bringing wider benefits for wellbeing, confidence and learning.
At Holley Park Academy, we encourage our children to enjoy reading as widely and often as possible!
'Sharing' Books
Alongside reading books to support decoding and blending, children in EYFS and KS1 also get to take home a book to share with their adults of their own choosing! This could be fiction or non-fiction, and may be beyond the child's current reading ability; however, it encourages children to be curious about the written word and begin to explore what interests them.
Story time
All children, from Nursery to Year 6 have dedicated time for storytelling built into their day. This allows children to sit back, relax and enjoy a range of stories read aloud to them. These stories are selected by their teacher from our Holley Park Reading Spine to ensure that children are exposed to a rich range of story types.
Readers' Theatre
Linking to our wider curriculum, KS2 children engage in fortnightly 'Readers' Theatre' sessions. Although designed to develop children's fluency and oracy skills, the children thoroughly enjoy the performance aspect of the sessions. Readers' Theatre supports the children's confidence and, best of all, it is a whole lot of fun!
Celebration of Reading
Celebrating our children's successes is an integral part of our practice here at Holley Park. As part of our weekly whole-school celebration assemblies, teachers choose children from their classes to be their 'Reader of the Week'.
Reading Cafés
We want all of our children and their families to enjoy reading- that's why we have our annual Reading Cafés for each year group. The sessions allow families to come together and simply enjoy reading with each other in a warm, friendly atmosphere.
World Book Day Celebrations
Each March the whole school comes together for World Book Day! The day is full of fun activities designed to get children excited about books, and, of course, fantastic costumes!
Adam Bushnell Visit
Each year, Holley Park have the amazing children's author, Adam Bushnell, in school to lead creative writing workshops in each class based around famous children's books. Adam also leads a parent/ carer session all around how families can promote a love of reading at home.
