Physical Education

PE at Holly Park

‘Work Together, Achieve More’

Subject Intent

Holley Park Academy recognises the value of Physical Education (P.E). Following the National Curriculum for physical education, we believe all children should:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives

There are three core pillars of learning at the heart of our curriculum that underpin our PE curriculum intent:

Subject Implementation

PE is delivered by our class teachers or by a specialist teacher.

  • Our PE sessions will be both indoor and outdoor for Reception and Key Stage 1.
  • They focus on mastering basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and coordination.
  • Pupils are encouraged to participate in team games and to develop simple tactics for being an effective team member.
  • Key Stage 2 pupils will also complete lessons inside and outside and may also visit other facilities including the local swimming pool. Swimming is introduced to the timetable from Key Stage 2.

In Key Stage One children will develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competition (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

In Key Stage Two children will continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

In PE, children will progress over time by experiencing a range of different sports and applying the skills taught in all areas. Our three core pillers underpin our  PE curriculum, which is split into SIX different areas and children will develop skills from each of these areas, each academic year

Invasion games-  children will learn to attack, defend, pass, keep possession, explore tactics, whilst following the rules of the game or sport focus.

Dance - children will learn a variety of skills such as sequences, expression, techniques in order to compose and perform a solo and group performance .

Gymnastics - Children will learn a number of balances, stretches, transitions, rolls, jumps in order to sequence together a number of moves to perform.

Outdoor Adventure- Children will take part in outdoor and adventurous activity both individually and within a team as they solve problems, learn to organise themselves and follow given trails as they compete against one another and themselves.

Athletics -  Children learn skills of running, jumping and throwing using a variety of different equipment and learn how to vary the speeds and appropriateness of  power to compete in a number of athletics events.

Swimming- children will learn to swim confidently, competently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres. They will also learn to use a range of strokes effectively - such as front crawl and breaststroke and how to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Statement for SEND

At Holley Park Academy we are committed to ensuring that all pupils access and participate in a broad and balanced PE curriculum. This is done through careful lesson planning and differentiation to make sure that all children, including those who have special educational needs, disabilities, English as an additional language or those who are gifted and talented are included and engaged.

Cultural capital

We take advantage of any opportunities to visit our local community or wider community to see what is happening around us, with adults modelling and encouraging the right social, language and behavioural skills. We also take advantage of in school and outer school competitions especially within the school trust. Where possible, we invite our parents and carers in to join us to participate in sporting activities, modelling to them behaviours we want to promote in our school and community and sharing ideas with them on how this can be supported at home too.
