PSHE and RHE

PSHE and RHE at Holly Park

(Including Fundamental British Values and Relationships and Health Education)

'Work together, achieve more'

Subject Intent

At Holley Park we believe that personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education plays a key role in enabling our pupils to flourish as individuals, now and in the future, and contribute positively as members of society in modern Britain.  A well-rounded and progressive PSHE curriculum is of the upmost importance in developing our pupils’ knowledge and skills to keep themselves healthy and safe, and help them to prepare for all the opportunities, challenges, life decisions and responsibilities they'll face.

There are three core pillars of learning at the heart of our curriculum that underpin our curriculum’s intent:

 Subject Implementation

Developed through the PSHE Association, we deliver our PSHE teaching through a sequenced, spiral curriculum that builds on prior learning as pupils progress through school and have dedicated curriculum time for this across school each week. This included the delivery of the statutory requirements of the Relationships and Health Education guidance as set out by the DfE (see separate RHE Policy on school website for more information about this). Furthermore, the teaching of Fundamental British Values, although covered discretely through our PSHE curriculum, are woven into everyday school life.

We break down our 3 core pillars of learning into 12 smaller themes across EYFS, key Stage one and Key Stage two, with a different theme covered each half-term:

We supplement our curriculum by providing additional opportunities for pupils to further develop their understanding, knowledge, and skills through additional activities such as educational visits and links with external partners.

Holley Park Academy is proud to be a Kidsafe school.

The programme runs from Year 1 to Year 6. The themes covered include:

  • Positive mental health

  • Emotional wellbeing

  • Understanding worried feelings

  • Peer pressure

  • Internet safety

  • Bullying / Cyber bullying

  • Keeping private places safe

  • Parents / Carers arguing

All aspects of the programme are delivered in a child-centred, age-approppriate way by trained staff. If you would like to know more about the programme, please visit the Kidsafe website:

"My child thoroughly enjoyed yesterday's KidSafe session and obviously found it interesting as she told me about the whole session and her answers, in detail, straight after school. She is looking forward to the next one... As a parent I think this is brilliant. My child knows we can talk about everything and anything at home but talking with her friends about 'yucky' feelings helps her understand that we all feel the same at times, and it is definitely OK not to be ok."

‘Inclusive education, promoting community cohesion to prepare young people and adults for life as global citizens.’

Holley Park Academy is proud to be a No Outsiders school.

The core values of the No Outsiders programme are:

  • Respect for diversity through education in schools.

  • Commitment to community cohesion through understanding and acceptance of difference.

  • Promotion of dialogue to counter fear and hate in society.

Our No Outsiders programme is delivered as part of our PSHE Curriculum and Personal Development offer. Children are taught about the Protected Characteristics (protected by the Equality Act 2010) and Fundamental British Values through a range of age-appropriate picture book lessons and weekly assemblies. There are then opportunities for discussion, debate and learning tasks linked to the themes explored.

To find out more about the programme, please visit the No Outsiders website: No-outsiders or request a Parent/ Carer Information Booklet from the school office.

At Holley Park Academy, there are No Outsiders; everyone is welcome!

Statement for SEND

PSHE education continues to play an important role for learners with SEND — rehearsing and embedding the practical skills and understanding they need to lead independent and fulfilling lives and enjoy safe and healthy relationships. Our PSHE lessons provide an inclusive environment where learners have the opportunity to explore and reflect upon issues that affect them and can develop strategies and skills to manage different real-life situations. When the curriculum needs adapting, to suit the needs of individual children, appropriate modifications are made by the class teacher with support of the SENDCo and the Curriculum Subject Lead.

Cultural capital

Cultural capital is the accumulation of knowledge, behaviours, and skills that a child can draw upon and which demonstrates their cultural awareness, knowledge and competence; it is one of the key ingredients a child will draw upon to be successful in society, their career and the world of work. Opportunities to support a child’s personal development and enhance their cultural capital is a golden thread throughout all aspects of the curriculum, but this is particularly true of PSHE education which specifically aims to provide children with the skills and knowledge they need to be to stay healthy, develop positive relationships and embrace the ever-changing world in which they live, both now and in the future as they enter the world of work.
