Communication, Language & Literacy
English
At Holley Park we teach reading and writing skills during the Literacy Hour, through shared and guided group work.  Our biggest aim is to stimulate an interest in reading and writing and to create an atmosphere in which children can develop an appreciation of language in a variety of forms.  We aim to ensure that all children are taught the necessary and relevant skills to understand the written word and to develop and expand their vocabulary, we also aim to improve children’s speaking and listening skills so that they are able to communicate and express themselves confidently and imaginatively.  The school’s reading programme encourages children to read for meaning and enjoyment so that they can experience a wide variety of reading material, such as stories, poetry, as well as non fiction and media texts.  We also encourage children to become enthusiastic and confident writers so that they are able to write using a variety of text types, including factual, descriptive and creative pieces.  Through our hard work at Holley Park we hope that each child will learn to read and write in the most enjoyable way possible.

Read Write Inc

Using RWI, the children learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read. It also allows them to spell effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into composing what they write.

READING
The children:
learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letters/letter groups using simple picture prompts
learn to read words using sound blending/Fred Talk
read lively stories featuring words they have learned to sound out
show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions.
Writing
The children will
learn to write the letters/letter groups which represent 44 sounds.
learn to write words by saying the sounds in Fred Talk
  write simple sentences
compose stories based on picture strips
compose a range of stories based on writing frames.
TALKING
Children are assessed so they work with children at the same level. This allows them to take a full part in all lessons.
They work in pairs so that they:
answer every question
practise every activity with their partner
take turns in talking to each other
